Monza – the highs and the lows of motor sport

A very late call to enter the LMS 1000 kilometres of Monza had the JWA organisation stretched to its limits. 14 days to prepare and get there was a tall order. We did get there, we looked great with
  • New livery – see below, thanks to Metamark
  • New team kit thanks to Mike at myworkwear.co.uk
  • New refuelling kit Steve at Sabelt UK
  • New flooring and boarding Showtrax

However a huge thank you to the guys of JWA both travelling and none travelling whose hard work and extraordinary efforts made it all possible.

JWA were able to engage the services of 2006 LMS GT2 champion Joel Camathias who at the last minute agreed to assist in driving duties. What a great job he did. While the regular drivers; Paul Daniels and Dave Cox set about learning car and circuit, Joel was able to provide competent feedback to set the car up and all were greatly impressed with a ninth in class place on the grid only 1.9 seconds from pole position. We may have been overlooked in the initial selection process but here we were making waves and proving to be a valuable attraction to the LMS show.Joel started the race and ran comfortably in the top ten just a second or so back from the pace setters but with one less fuel stop planned we were going to be in a strong position at the finish. A pace car period on 40 minutes had all the leading class runners heading for the pits for fuel and tyres. The JWA strategy of four stops meant we could not pit now so stayed out and for 4 heady laps we led the class. With fuel running low Camathais came in on lap 33 to hand over to Paul Daniels who was very quick to reach race pace and consolidate our position. Then just 12 laps later Paul radioed in with gear selection difficulties and less than a lap later on selecting third gear for the Ascari chicane the gearbox seized pitching the car into a lurid spin. The JWA car was going no further.

New Livery

The following was extracted from the Dailysportscar website

Down at James Watt Automotive the #95 Porsche 997 RSR was simply gleaming in its new 2007 livery, paying homage to the classic Martini colours. 2006 GT2 Champion Joel Camathias has been added to the team’s driving squad for this round and all were happy that they, and the third Felbmayr Proton Porsche, have been admitted to the entry as others have found time running out.

“The colour scheme was Paul Daniels’ idea and it looks great doesn’t it?”

Yes it certainly does. The team’s current plans include all of the remaining Le Mans series calendar with the exception of Valencia (where a 50 car limit applies) and the Spa 24 Hours.

Paul Daniels is enjoying his new car enormously: “When we moved up from the 996 GT3 RS to the RSR there was a step up, particularly with the sequential box but there were lots of similarities between the two. This is a completely different, and much better car altogether, huge attention to detail for endurance racing and it seems obvious that Porsche has been encouraged to up their game with the steps forward being taken by their opposition in GT2.

“As for the livery, my first trip to Le Mans was back in 1977 when the Martini 936 won and with the other retro stuff coming back too (Gulf in particular) it seemed a really iconic image to follow. We’re still not done with it yet, there will be more work on the sills for later races.”

Thanks to all at DailySportscar (DSC) and Peter May for the picture. Click on the link at the bottom of the page to visit the DSC website where for a small fee you can be kept up to date on an hourly basis of all our adventures in LMS.

History

The red and blue stripes of drinks giant Martini have been synonymous with Porsche and motor racing since the works Porsches of the late sixties first started appearing in these evocative colours. The picture on the left shows the 1978 Porsche 935 of Jochen Mass and Jacky Ickx on the Nurburgring Nordschleife. The picture on the right the JWA homage liveried 997 hustling through the Variante Alta.
